Specialized Supervision
- Spl. IGP, SCRB: Looks after the State Crime Record Bureau and all technical branches and bureaus of CID.
- Spl. IGP, PAW: Looks after Prevention of Atrocities against Women and child-related crimes.
- Dy. IGP, EOW: Investigations related to Economic Offences under CID.
- Dy. IGP, Admn.: Administration tasks related to the establishment of CID.
Field Supervision
- Regional Superintendents of Police (SPs): Supervise investigation work in their regions.
- DySP/PI: In-charge of investigations for every District Unit of CID.

Functions
- Data Compilation: Crime and criminal data compiled for analysis and research of professional value.
- ADR Cell: Liaises with anti-dacoity squads at unit level and prepares analytical weekly reports.
- Statistical Branch: Compiles crime and criminal statistics from the State.
- MOB: Maintains information on various criminals.
- Special Crime/Narcotic Cell: Maintains information about Terrorist crimes, Naxalite crimes, NDPS-related crimes, and crimes related to firearms and explosives.
- Gazette Section: Handles correspondence related to material for publication in the gazette.
- Library: Maintained at CID Headquarters.
Computer Section
Control & Supervision
- General control is with Addl. DGP, CID, M.S., Pune; assisted by Spl. IGP, SCRB and SP (Law & Research).
- DySsP are deputed at Ranges & Commissionerates to supervise computerization projects in their jurisdictions.
Crime & Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS)

- A NeGP Mission Mode computerization project, managed and controlled by CID.

Capacity Building
- District Computer Training Centres (DCTC) established in all units; 66 DCTCs functional, imparting regular training per NCRB syllabus.
Finger Print Bureau (FPB), Maharashtra
Location & Administration
- Main Finger Print Bureau located in Pune under CID administration.
Regional Bureaus
- Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Aurangabad.
Background
- FPB established in 1899 at Mumbai under the Inspector General of Police, Bombay Presidency.
- The main bureau now functions under CID, M.S., Pune; three regional bureaus engage in recording/searching finger impression slips of arrestees and retrieving chance prints from scenes of crime.
Modernization
- FPB is acquiring AFIS (Automated Finger Print Identification System) with palm print capabilities and scalability to include iris and facial image recognition.
- Proposal: A computer with live scanner and printer at each police station for collection of finger and palm prints.
Work of FPB
- Recording of fingerprint slips of convicts and arrestees.
- Searching fingerprint slips to ascertain antecedents.
- Comparisons & Opinions on finger-impressions on documents (civil/criminal) for courts and other agencies.
- Comparison of latent prints and providing opinions.
- Record & intimation of externment/absconder reports; evidence in court.

Handwriting Section (Chief State Examiner of Documents & Photographic Bureau – CSED)
Location & Administration
- CSED situated in Pune under CID administration.
Regional Bureaus
- Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad (verification of documents involved in crime cases).
Organization & Role
- Renders expert advice to police agencies, courts, and State Government departments through examination of handwriting, signatures, and disputed documents.
- Historical constitution via Government Resolutions (1939, 1958, 1976) expanded the units and attached a photographic unit.
Jurisdiction
- Mumbai Unit: Brihan Mumbai cases.
- Nagpur Unit: Vidharbha region cases.
- Aurangabad Unit: Marathwada region cases.
- Pune (Handwriting) Section: Remaining parts of the State.
Nature of Work
- Identification of handwriting and detection of forgeries across documents such as drafts, orders, contracts, agreements, assignments, wills, deeds, tickets, stamps, manuscripts, certificates, letters, degrees/diplomas, court papers, autographs, etc.
Examination & Evidence
- Examination of original questioned documents using magnification and modern electronic devices.
- Expert opinions furnished to referring officers/agencies.
- Examiners provide court evidence when required.
Photographic Section
Organization & Charge
- Assists police by photographing questioned documents and fingerprints (including chance prints).
- Works under local heads of the Handwriting & Photographic Bureau.
Scope of Work
- Document photography for handwriting cases.
- Fingerprint photography, including chance prints.
- M.O.B. criminal photography, externees, identity cards.
- Scene-of-crime photography in serious/sensational/important cases.
Functions
- Field visits to crime scenes; appearance in courts to give expert evidence.
M.O.B. Photographic Centres
- Centres at Pune, Thane, Aurangabad, Nagpur under supervision of the Chief State Examiner of Documents (annual inspections).
Dog Training Center, CID, M.S., Pune
Location & History
- Situated at Shivajinagar Police Headquarters, Pune; in existence since 1965 as part of State CID.
Oversight & Staff
- Training organized by Chief Dog Master under Addl. SP supervision.
- Staff includes four dog trainers (HC rank) and attendants.
Deployment
- 92 Dog Units at district places and commissionerates; each headed by a PSI.
Training
- Initial training period: ~six months (varies by dog).
